The Chancellor’s War Chest and Tax Exemption

A studded ‘Russia leather’ coffer with gilt brass mounts on a carved mahogany stand, width 127cms.
This coffer, or muniment chest, is one a small extant group, all have associations with men who held the office of Chancellor of the Exchequer during the mid-eighteenth century.

Following our attribution the piece was offered under the Allotment in lieu of Taxes procedure and accepted by the Department of Culture, Heritage & Sport.

The coffer can be seen at Temple Newsam House, Leeds.
